Micro and Nano Mechanics Lab
The laboratory for Micro and Nano Mechanics in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the New Jersey Institute of Technology aims to provide fundamental understanding of the mechanics of deformation, fracture, degradation, and failure of solid materials (such as metals, ceramics, polymers, and other emerging materials) using a combined experimental and modeling approach. The current focus of this lab is to understand the role of stresses in the degradation of lithium-ion batteries; this knowledge will enable durable and light weight battery designs for automotive and other future energy storage needs. The unique facilities of this lab include the experimental apparatus to carryout real-time stress and mechanical property measurements while the battery electrodes are being electrochemically cycled. We also have the capability to carryout continuum level mechanical property measurements at high and low temperature environments. We develop new nano and micro-scale testing setups to understand the mechanics at nano and microscale pertaining to the interface fracture, degradation, and failure of solids.
The lab was established by the PI, Siva Nadimpalli, who is currently an assistant professor in the mechanical engineering department at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Siva obtained his MS and PhD in mechanical engineering from Indian Institute of Science and University of Toronto, respectively. Prior to joining NJIT, Siva was a postdoctoral research associate at Brown University. Siva also has more than two years of Industrial experience working as mechanical engineer for GE Wind Turbine division, Bangalore, India and for Nanowave Technologies Inc., Toronto, Canada.
